“Heartbeat” Bills Are A Gross 2019 Trend

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE! We hate when we see a bad trend developing but have no way to stop it. Just this Tuesday we wrote about the trend of heartbeat bill being introduced in states like Kentucky (and Ohio last year) and then told you to check to see if there was one coming in your state.

Well guess what, we can add two more states to the abysmal list: South Carolina and Florida both have politicians who filed fetal heartbeat bills this week! In South Carolina 50 representatives are co-sponsoring the bill. Make no MISTAKE these bills are total and complete abortion bans. They’re dressed up in treacly language to make them appear more “humane” but they’re actually entirely cruel and despicable. ROE WAS DECIDED AND REAFFIRMED, GUYS! Stop trying to go backwards!

Speaking of going backwards, we’re paying special attention to SCOTUS today as they decide whether to hear the fetal burial case in Indiana. Real quick: this would require burial and cremation for all fetal remains… even miscarriages. Remember how we asked “Are they gonna start considering SPERMS and periods people too” and it was like… a big joke? NOT REALLY A JOKE NOW. Just disgusting, and CRUEL TO PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO HAVE BABIES AND HAVE MISCARRIAGES TOO. That’s the thing here, these people pretend to care so much about pregnant women and babies, but…. They consistently throw them under the bus in their single-minded quest to shame.

So watch with us and keep your fingers crossed to see which way SCOTUS goes. If it’s bad, we’ll be seeing you in DC this spring!

Just Another Tuesday: More Unconfirmed Science and Shaming Tactics

REMORSE CODE: Here’s the latest on the much-hyped “abortion regret” meme. As we’ve been telling you for some time, anti-choice crusaders love to push the lie that that there is widespread regret among people who choose abortion. And they like to use a scientifically bogus “abortion pill reversal” myth to frame their scheme. A San Diego doctor claims that he can “reverse” the increasingly popular medication abortion procedure after the patient has taken one pill of the two-pill process. There is a lag of one to two days between taking the pills. Here are the facts—he can’t. A certain percentage of abortions will fail in any case if the second pill is not taken. And here’s another fact—abortion patients do NOT change their mind halfway through. And the whole notion of “abortion regret” is being cynically manipulated by anti-choice people. Certainly there are a lot of conflicting emotions involved in any major life decision, but actual studies show that by far the most common emotion following an abortion is simply relief. The Anti’s need to stop trying to replace that relief with regret through their shaming tactics.

The List of Things That Hurt Pregnant People Is Getting Super F*cking Long

COUNTRY MATTERS: If every pregnant person deserves the right to choice, then those that choose to go through with their pregnancy deserve the right to accessible and affordable maternity care. And increasingly, that’s just not available in rural areas. Due to declining population, 80 rural hospitals have closed since 2010, and over 200 maternity wards shut down between 2004 and 2014. Over half of rural counties in America don’t have hospital-based obstetrics. Mothers have less access to prenatal care, and the US infant mortality rate is the worst among developed countries. We need to value motherhood by making it voluntary AND safe for those who choose it!

Iowa’s Motto: Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain (but not for women, duh)

CRUSHING WAIT: Legal teams defending abortion rights in IOWA have a message for conservative lawmakers in that state—they be trippin’ if they think they can force those seeking abortions to make multiple trips to the clinic. Iowa has imposed a 72-hour waiting period for abortion procedures—forcing many in the largely rural state to travel long distances for more than one clinic visit. And right now lawyers for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa are busy arguing a court case over these restrictions, pointing out that the waiting period puts an undue burden on poor women who can’t afford the travel or missed work. Waiting periods are one of the oldest tricks in the anti-choice book, but the clowns who oppose reproductive rights are still good at pulling out their old tricks along with all the new ones. Thanks to all of the legal eagles who keep up the fight against them!

Florida Has the Chance to do This Right, Don’t Florida This, Florida!

MORE WAIT PROBLEMS! Meanwhile, FLORIDA is dealing with its own 24-hour mandatory waiting period for an abortion. That 2015 law has been put on hold by the Florida Supreme Court, but a judge is hearing arguments on it this week. Like even longer forced waits in other states, the law forces patients to make at least one extra trip to the clinic—for people who are hard-pressed for the time and money. Don’t let uterus-occupying bullies wait you out! Props to Gainsville Woman Care for taking this case on!

#WeShowUp – Rosé Salute To Illinois Activists

TAKING ON THE GORE-GOYLES: What’s worse than an unwanted dick pick in your inbox? How about a bloody fetus on your commute? Yep, the nasty GORE-GOYLES who haunt busy intersections by waving bloody images of medical procedures were at it again, this time in Mokena, ILLINOIS. But once again they were met with SHEROIC counter-protesters who parried their SHOCK & SCHLOCK tactics with cold hard TRUTH! You can’t argue with a gory propaganda poster, but you can let the public know that there are people willing to stand up to this kind of intimidation and harassment. A huge shout out to everybody who is out there countering the gruesome message of the anti-choice ghouls! Let’s leave no gory fetus pic unanswered!

Trump’s Rollback of Birth Control Rights Will Run Into a Legal Buzzsaw

LA Times

HARD TO SWALLOW–The Trump White House is trying to shove a rollback of contraceptive rights down your throat. And NO, that is NOT a form of birth control!

Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services under Tom Price-Is-Wrong wants to change the rules to allow ANY employer who claims to have “religious beliefs and moral convictions” to deny their employees birth control coverage.

And they’re breaking the law by trying to put the rules into effect without any notice or public comment—an understandable approach since the public’s comments are going to be along the lines of NO FUCKING WAY!

Florida Will Offer Birth Certificates To Miscarried Fetuses Now

Bustle

CERTIFIED CRAZY!

Remember—no matter how crazy things get, they’re always weirder in FLORIDA. Florida’s latest foray into the fever swamp of anti-abortion nuttiness is to mandate the offer of “birth certificates” for miscarried fetuses as early as 10 weeks! (They’re actually called “Certificate of Non-Viable Birth.)

Make no mistake—this is a “personhood” ploy as obvious and slimy as the fetal funerals being proposed in other states. It’s an attack on anyone who wants to control their own uterus—and a cynical slap in the face to those who experience the trauma of a miscarriage.

Knock it off, Florida, before you start mandating obituaries for spilled semen.

Dominican Republic: Vote Against Decriminalization of Abortion, A Betrayal to Women

Amnesty International

IT’S A CRIME!

Abortion is a crime in the Dominican Republic—and it’s going to stay that way after a cowardly vote by the DR Senate against the decriminalization of abortion. Amnesty International said “Instead of playing political games with women’s lives, authorities should focus their time and efforts on protecting their human rights.”

Meanwhile in the US there are people working every day to make abortion a crime and to make anyone who gets one criminals. Move the Dominican Republic forward and don’t let the US slide backwards!

A writer searched for a Planned Parenthood clinic emblematic of all others. She found it in Phoenix.

AZ Central

File under WELL MEANING BUT MISGUIDED.

For an article in Allure magazine, a writer wanted to find one Planned Parenthood clinic that represented all of them. She ended up choosing a clinic in Maryvale, a neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a great article about an exemplary clinic–one that serves a bilingual area where over half the population is below the poverty level.

One small problem–this particular clinic doesn’t perform abortions. Now, not all PP locations do. But the fact that many do is the reason the organization is in the crosshairs of nut-bag politicians who are trying to shut down funding for ALL Planned Parenthood clinics, even ones like this that don’t offer abortion services.

PP provides lifesaving and compassionate service to underserved communities, including breast exams, pap smears, birth control, and–at some locations–abortion services. All of that was made clear in the article. But the point could have been made with more sensitivity to women who seek abortions by choosing a clinic that performed abortions.

Allure’s efforts here are much appreciated! But we have to be careful not to accidentally stigmatize the very rights we’re trying to protect. So SAY IT WITH ME: “THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING OR PERFORMING ABORTIONS!”

Georgia 6th: Handel Faces New Attack Over Komen Stance

Atlanta Journal Constitution

HARD TO HANDEL

In the brief time that she was VP for policy at the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Georgia pol Karen Handel, now running for Tom Price’s vacated Congressional seat from Georgia, used that position to stop Komen’s partnerships with Planned Parenthood. It caused such a backlash that Handel had to resign in disgrace.

Handel’s actions jeopardized breast cancer screenings for thousands of women, just so she could advance her radical anti-abortion agenda. The run-off election in Georgia is on June 20th—tell Karen HANDEL THE TRUTH will force her to be accountable!

Vagical Mystery Tour Update!

Birmingham, Alabama was a dream come true! A lot of people put their contact information on the LPJL signup sheet, and others… well, let’s just say they left their calling card.

“Place of Death” just sounds like the description for a comedy show where EVERYONE ONSTAGE KILLED IT! HOW’D THEY KNOW!? These anti-choice are wackjobs- emphasis on JOBS. They are some of the busiest people around. How do you balance a “Sidewalk Psycho/Comedy Show Psychic” schedule all in one day? That takes skill.

But wait… There’s more!

Wait Problems

pablo-4If a person wants to stop something that they don’t have the authority or resources to, what do they do? Delay. Stall. Stonewall. Block. Impede and generally fuck with.

So it is with the creeples trying to occupy your uterus. They can’t destroy abortion rights, but they can muck up your access to them enough that you can’t exercise them. Every moment they can delay an abortion makes that abortion potentially more expensive, difficult, and dangerous for the woman who is trying to exercise her rights.

Since the Supreme Court took some of the teeth out of TRAP laws, abortion opponents have been relying more on the tried and true tactics of imposing waiting periods before a woman can have an abortion.

There’s a case before the Florida Supreme Court right now challenging the state’s 24 mandatory abortion waiting period. Proponents of imposing a waiting period say women need to take their time. Denise Harle, the deputy solicitor general defending the waiting period said “There is a societal interest in making sure people are entering into these decisions with due deliberation.” To which we say… ABORTION IS NOT AN “IMPULSE BUY”!

We’re not buying a roll of Mentos at the checkout. We’re acting on a major life decision–and yes, WE ALREADY THOUGHT ABOUT IT!

This isn’t about “thinking it over.” This is about delaying, shaming, inconvenience, and exposing women to additional intimidation from anti-abortion clinic trolls by requiring an extra visit.

Currently 27 states require a waiting period to have an abortion–five of them make a woman wait 72 hours! Stand with Lady Parts Justice League and help to fight mandatory waiting periods all over the country.

Don’t delay!

Swamp Things

gator coming out of sewer

It’s not like Florida isn’t already full of things that can kill you–hurricanes, alligators, pythons, George Zimmerman… now reptilian-brained conservatives in Florida are trying to pass a law that allows the government to kill you for using birth control.

REALLY! Anti-abortion dead-enders are pushing to amend the state’s constitution to ban abortion–and to make anyone seeking an abortion or performing one guilty of first-degree murder. And under Florida law, they would be subject to the death penalty.

Oh, and that includes anyone using many of the most popular and efficient forms of birth control like the morning after pill, intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive implants, and hormonal birth control pills.

The ballot initiative considers a fertilized egg an “unborn human being” from the “moment of fertilization.” And abortion is defined as the “use or prescription of any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance or device, to intentionally kill an unborn human being.”

Great! Florida is home to prehistoric reptiles who will drag you into the swamp, bath-salt zombies who will eat your face, and racist vigilantes who will plug you full of bullets. And they want to pass a law to execute women for using an IUD.

In Florida, shooting anyone who annoys you is “standing your ground,” and a visit to the CVS after a condom breaks is first-degree murder. Hey, maybe if you shoot your fetus, Florida law would excuse you.
